What a story just glad it was you and not me but now I know why I don’t go to far out places and never try the local food, of the places I do adventure to.
I somehow felt a combination of pity, laughter, and worry for you at the same time as I heard this. I have now officially heard a traumatic ass-wipe story of an internet friend hahaha.
I had been through something similar, but not this bad, ~7 years ago.
When I was 18, for some uninteresting reasons, I basically got stuck in Taksim Square, Istanbul, at 1 am, when the weather was 3 degrees, and all trains going towards my ~120 miles away accommodation were closed for the night. I remember getting sucking it up to some locals and paying most of the money I had in my jeans pocket to stay the night at this shitty matchbox hotel, where I just wanted to be put out of the misery of my excruciating pain in my feet and shivering cold. I made it to my so-called home the next afternoon and was just grateful.
Anyway, your story is much, much interesting, haha, and will definitely serve as a nice anecdote to shill your newsletter whenever someone asks me, "oh, so what substacks you've been reading?"
he waited for a while at the desk with me but when my fate was seemingly sealed i told him there was no point in mutual suffering and that he should go on without me. he got on the flight i was meant to be on and had a smooth transit
don’t think he fully understood my pain until he read this today aha
