I saw this behavior in my rural highschool. This contempt of people who could actually read/write at a basic highschool level. This was 2014 when I graduated. Most kids would proudly tell me "I haven't read a book in 3 years.".
It will only get worse.
I hate to be "that guy" recommending books but... If you haven't already you need to read Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand speaks about this exact issue.

yeah the haven’t read a book flex is a weird one for me bc i think i used to be that person and now i can’t imagine why someone would feel pride in it
have added it to my reading list and will report back!
